Welcome to Land, Rights, and Voices: An Introduction to ASEAN Guidelines on Recognition of Customary Tenure in Forested Landscapes, an online course on the ASEAN Customary Tenure Guidelines

Across Southeast Asia, Indigenous Peoples and local communities have lived in harmony with their lands, waters, and forests for generations, guided by traditions passed down over time. These traditions have become customary systems that govern how resources are used and protected.

This course is for everyone working closely with communities to navigate these challenges. Over four modules, you will:

  • Understand the foundational concepts of customary tenure, why it matters, and the ASEAN Guiding Principles on its recognition.
  • Explore good practices, as well as challenges faced in different ASEAN countries, to see how principles play out in real contexts.
  • Practice applying tools such as participatory mapping, the steps of Free, Prior and Informed Consent (FPIC), and inclusive facilitation strategies that strengthen community voices.

By the end of this journey, you will not only understand the principles—you will be able to apply them in your context, compare them with your country’s laws, and weave them into your community work, programs, or policy efforts.
